Boo! Why You Should Run a Halloween Themed Promotion

If you're reading all of the ecommerce blogs there is a good chance you're already starting to think about your end of year holidays. Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, Boxing Day, Return Everything Day, Get Shredded Wrapping Paper Out of the House Day (I may have made up some of those).

But with more than 8 weeks until the holiday shopping season kicks into high gear for most people, there are other seasonal themes you can use to engage your past and future customers.  

Halloween, for one, is the right around the corner and a perfect theme to jump on. I mean, who doesn't love Halloween? (And by the way, The National Retail Federation is predicting that Americans will spend $9.1 billion on Halloween this year, a record, up 8.3% from last year.) For some it's about the changing of the seasons, for others it's the thrill of being scared, and for others it's simply the joy of candy and pumpkin spice latte's. (You can guess which camp I am in!) Either way, we all have strong associations with Halloween that you can tap into with a holiday theme.   

Why Are Holiday and Seasonal Themes So Useful?

Great question, I am glad you asked.

As people responsible for marketing and selling, we’re always looking for a reason to reach out and to have something new to talk about.  Seasonal themes give us the opportunity to do four things really effectively.

  1. Connect with the mindset of your customers: Even if you’re not selling candy or costumes, Halloween and Fall in general are on the mind of your potential customers. Connecting to that existing mindset can be a powerful way to build a relationship and engage people coming to your site for the first time.

  2. Create a sense of urgency: Any time there is a deadline, it gets people to act. For better or worse that is just part of human nature. And if you’re running a short-lived discount or limited time product you can use holiday deadlines (like Halloween) to have a begin and end to your marketing campaign.

  3. Fill your social and email feed: Building a month long campaign around a seasonal theme gives you plenty to post and email about that ties back to your business. Instead of staring blankly at your Facebook page or Instagram app, you could be posting or emailing about your holiday special offer with beautiful seasonal images to help promote it.

  4. Change it up for your return visitors: Whether it’s a seasonal product, a special promotion, or even just a themed welcome message, you want return visitors to feel like there is always something new going on and that they should check back regularly to see the latest different things you have to offer.
