Post-BFCM Emails: How to Turn Black Friday Customers Into Repeat Buyers
Most BFCM shoppers buy once and disappear. Here’s what to send after the sale to bring them back.

Written by Erin Garrett
Black Friday and Cyber Monday bring in more first-time customers than any other week of the year. But without a reason to come back, most of them won't.
We see the same BFCM mistake every year. Merchants spend weeks preparing for the sale, then go quiet the moment it ends. By January, those new customers have moved on.
The good news? It's an easy fix. It's a simple plan for what to send, and when. Here's a timeline you can set up now, before the rush, so it runs on its own while you're packing orders.
Right After the Sale: Say Thanks and Set Expectations
From Black Friday through the first week of December, focus on trust, not sales. Your new customer just took a chance on a store they may have found through an ad or a deal. Show them they made a good call.
1. A thank-you that sounds like a person (day 0–1)
Skip the generic "Thanks for your order!" Send a short note from the founder or team, a quick line about what makes your brand different, and a heads-up on what happens next.
2. Shipping updates (as it ships)
Carriers are slammed during BFCM, and delays happen. Proactive updates cut down on "where's my order?" emails and keep anxious buyers calm. SMS works well here because it's quick and gets seen. (Planning your sale-week texts too? Here's what to text during Black Friday, and when.)
3. Product tips (a few days after delivery)
Send a short guide on how to use, wear, or care for what they bought. It reduces returns and buyer's remorse, and it reminds them why they bought in the first place. For more ideas, see how to keep ecommerce customers engaged post-purchase.
Tip: Hold off on another discount this week. They just bought on sale. Another coupon now teaches them to only shop when there's a deal.
Early to Mid-December: Help Them Finish Their Shopping
Many BFCM buyers were shopping for gifts, and they're not done yet. This is your chance to be helpful while they still have a list to check off.
4. A "still shopping?" cross-sell
Recommend products that pair with what they bought, or a short gift guide by price or recipient. Keep it useful and easy to shop. Need inspiration? Browse real holiday emails and texts in our Swipe Files.
5. A shipping deadline reminder
Let customers know the last day to order for delivery by the holidays. Check your carriers' cutoff dates and add a countdown bar to your site so the message is consistent everywhere. Our Black Friday resource center shows how to add a countdown timer to your display.
6. A gift card push after the cutoff
Once standard shipping can't make it in time, switch your messaging to gift cards. They're the perfect last-minute gift, they deliver instantly, and they bring a new customer to your store in January.
Tip: Use segmentation to exclude people who bought in the last few days from cross-sell sends. Nobody likes a "you might also like" email before their first order has even arrived.
January: Earn the Second Purchase
The holidays are over, inboxes are quiet, and your competitors have gone dark. That makes January one of the best months to turn a BFCM buyer into a repeat customer.
7. A review request
By now they've used what they bought. Ask how it's going. Reviews help your next round of shoppers, and customers who leave one are more likely to buy again.
8. A second-purchase offer
This is where a discount earns its keep. A "thanks for being a new customer" offer, early access to a new drop, or free shipping on their next order gives them a reason to come back on your terms, not BFCM's. More tactics in how to improve repeat purchase rates.
9. A win-back for anyone who's gone quiet
Some BFCM customers won't open a thing after their first order. Send them one last friendly check-in with your best reason to return, or set up an automated customer winback email. If they still don't engage, consider moving them out of your regular sends to protect your deliverability.
Tip: Already a customer? Ask our MCP which of your BFCM customers haven't purchased again, and build your January list from the answer.
Set It Up Before the Rush
You won't have time to build any of this the week of Black Friday. The good news is most of it can be automated today and left to run.
In Privy, start with a Purchase Follow-Up flow for your thank-you, shipping, and product tip messages. Then schedule your December cross-sell and shipping deadline campaigns, and draft your January offer so it's ready to send when you're back from the holidays. Here's how to build a Purchase Follow-Up flow.
BFCM gets customers in the door. What you send next decides whether they stay.
