What is an MCP and why does it matter for your BFCM prep?

Skip the generic BFCM checklist. Privy's MCP connects Claude and ChatGPT to your store data, so your plan is built on what actually works for your customers.

Your BFCM Strategy Needs Your Data, Not a Checklist.

Every BFCM guide says the same five things: send a teaser email, launch early access, count down the urgency, don't forget SMS, follow up with a win-back flow. You've read it a hundred times. So has every other brand competing for the same inbox this November.

Every brand running this checklist has different customers, different history, different numbers. The checklist treats them all the same. What you need instead is a personalized BFCM strategy built on your own data.

What is an MCP, and why does it matter for your BFCM prep?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the connection that lets AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT easily connect to your data. When you connect to the Privy MCP, you can ask questions like “rank my Flows by attributed revenue during BFCM last year” or “which flows are potentially misconfigured?” The answers are pulled directly from your Privy account, and connecting takes just a few minutes.

It's part of a bigger shift in how brands and AI tools work together. If you want the wider picture, we broke it down in Agentic Commerce: How Smart Brands Are Learning in ChatGPT Now.

Generic checklist vs. personalized BFCM strategy

A checklist tells you to "segment your VIPs." By using Privy’s MCP, you can understand segments, campaigns, displays or flows performance using your numbers, not someone else’s best practices.

Here’s what it looks like:

You ask: "Compare my flow performance during the 30-day window surrounding BFCM in 2025 versus 2024."

Then ask: "Which single flow moved the most, and in which direction? Break that flow performance down message by message."

That's a real prompt from Privy's library. It's also the fastest way to know exactly where your BFCM budget should go, instead of guessing.

A few more, straight from the same library:

  • "Which displays brought me the most new subscribers?" Build your list-growth push on what already works, not a generic popup template.
  • "Group my flows by trigger and show each flow's status, channel, key filters, and current population where available. Then list common Privy triggers I am not using." This doesn't just report what exists, it tells the brand what they're missing. A gap analysis they didn't know to ask for.
  • "Rank my flows by attributed revenue in the last 90 days" Know which automation to lean on hardest when volume spikes.

Every answer comes from your own Privy account. Not a benchmark report. Not an industry average.

"We asked Claude to recommend email topics, and it told us which emails were most likely to get customers to click. When we don't have a specific product to push, we build off of that."

— Michael Hsu, Managing Director, Footprint USA

Why this matters more during BFCM than any other time of year

BFCM compresses a quarter's worth of decisions into a few weeks. A checklist can tell you what to do. It can't tell you what's already working for your brand, and that's the only input that actually moves revenue. Privy's MCP gives a $1M–$20M brand the power of an in-house data team, no headcount required. Ask it a question, get the same kind of breakdown an analyst would spend an afternoon building.

Get your BFCM strategy from your own data

The checklist is still going to tell you to send a teaser email and count down the urgency. That’s not a bad thing – there’s a lot of sound advice that focuses on the fundamentals. What it can't tell you is which of your customers actually respond to that urgency, or which channel, email or SMS, they'll respond on. That part comes from your own data, not a template.

If you're already on Privy, connect it to Claude or ChatGPT and ask a few questions about last year's performance. Make sure you connect Claude or ChatGPT to your other tools as well, such as Shopify.

The BFCM Hub has the connection steps, more prompts to run, and the rest of what we're covering as part of your BFCM prep this season.

FAQ

What is Privy's MCP? It's a connection that lets AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT read your Privy email and SMS marketing data: campaigns, flows, contacts, segments, displays, orders, and your connected store's product catalog. You ask questions about your own data directly in the chat, instead of pulling reports manually.

Which AI assistants work with it? Claude and ChatGPT are the two most common, but it works with Gemini CLI, Cursor, and any other assistant that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth.

Can it change anything in my Privy account? No. Every tool is read-only. It can look at your data but can't edit a campaign, flow, or contact.

Do I need a year of history in Privy for this to be useful? No. If you're new to Privy, it can still read your connected Shopify store data. The longer you've been running campaigns and flows through Privy, the more it has to compare against, but you don't need existing Privy history to start asking questions.

Do I need a paid plan to use it? Yes, Privy's MCP requires a paid Privy plan.
