Glossary - Exit Rate
What is an Exit Rate?
Exit Rate
Exit Rate measures the percentage of users who leave a website from a specific page, regardless of how many pages they viewed beforehand.
How Exit Rate Is Calculated
Exit Rate = Exits from a Page ÷ Total Pageviews × 100
This metric focuses on where sessions end, not how they begin.
Exit Rate vs. Bounce Rate
While often confused, these metrics differ:
- Exit Rate shows where users leave the site
- Bounce Rate shows sessions with only one pageview
A page can have a high exit rate without a high bounce rate.
Why Exit Rate Matters
Exit rate helps identify pages where users commonly drop off, such as:
- Checkout steps
- Pricing pages
- Forms or account pages
Analyzing exit rate can reveal friction points and opportunities for optimization.
