Meet the Yo Mama's Foods Team

How it all started

David Habib started Yo Mama’s Foods in 2017. While working out of his parents’ house, he pursued two passions: bringing people together and creating clean, delicious food. The brand’s name is an homage to all of our Mamas, who taught us about love and community through fresh, homemade meals.

Fast forward to today. Yo Mama’s Foods has grown to a small, but mighty team of just under 20 people who work hard to create protein-packed pasta, all-natural sauces, and more. Each recipe is crafted without added sugar, gums, fillers, or preservatives. Even as they’ve grown, they’ve held steadfast to their mission of bringing folks together and delivering food that not only tastes incredible, but that you can feel good about serving to the people you love the most.

A few years into running their business, the Yo Mama’s Foods team felt that their email and SMS marketing had grown difficult to manage. “We were using multiple tools that didn’t talk to each other well,” says Bryce Weeden, Digital Specialist at Yo Mama’s Foods. “We wanted a way to easily engage our audience, grow our list, and drive repeat purchases,” she added.

Around this time, they started to hear positive things about Privy through other small business owners in their network. They were impressed with the idea of a strong Shopify integration and decided to give Privy a try.

Yo Mama’s Foods joined Privy and finally had one tool for all their needs. First, they activated popups to start growing their list. When they added SMS to their plan, they were able to easily add a second step to their display and collect phone numbers.

With the help of Sam King, their dedicated Privy Customer Success Manager, the team also worked to launch multiple automated flows, including welcome emails to greet new subscribers and purchase follow-ups to boost repeat purchases. Their automations have allowed them to scale their retention strategy by firing out restock reminders 30 days post-purchase. One of their marketing pillars has been their abandoned cart emails and texts, which have been “game-changing for recapturing sales, and the ability to A/B test has helped us optimize quickly,” Bryce shared.

In addition to their popups and automated emails and texts, they engage with their list by sending weekly campaigns to promote sales, deliver delicious recipes, and share exciting brand news. Bryce mentioned that the team “loves how seamless the email and SMS campaigns are to set up” in Privy.

The Results

Since switching to Privy, Yo Mama’s Foods has grown their email list by over 2,700% and noted a clear lift in their repeat purchase rate (they credit much of this lift to their automated email flows).

In addition to list growth and retention improvements, Bryce notes an increase in efficiency, stating that “the time saved on campaign setup means [the team] can focus more on creative and product launches.” In short, the less time they spent hopping between different tools, the more time they had to dedicate to elevating their brand.

Looking Ahead

In the coming weeks and months, Bryce is “excited to keep testing new seasonal popups, expanding our SMS efforts, and creating more personalized campaigns for our customers.” With the holiday season just around the corner, the team is also looking forward to partnering with their Customer Success Manager, Sam, to cook up some unique, engaging holiday campaigns.
