Ha okay, so maybe it’s too good to be true. But this is the problem I want to talk about today. So many business owners want to be top ranked and actually show up when consumers type in their pain points and questions into google but they aren’t willing to put in the work. So what is, “the work”?

Truthfully, it takes around 18 months of consistent posting, creating, sharing, and providing value to start getting traction, a real, engaged audience, and people flooding to your store organically. So don’t complain that you posted weekly blog posts for a month written by someone on Fiverr that doesn’t even understand the true significance of underwater basket weaving, or whatever your business may be. There are ten of thousands of small businesses out there just like yours, so why would it be that easy?

This is one of the reasons why content marketing is a personal favorite pillar of marketing for me. Why? Because it’s a game of patience. It’s built for people that don’t have money to invest in their business, but time. Think about this. How much of your business has changed over the last 2 years? How much progress have you really made on the goals you set 2 years ago. I’m not trying to get you down too much but hear me out. When I say it takes 18 months to see returns with content marketing, people immediately think its far too long to wait. They absolutely won’t do it. But what if you started two years ago? What if when everything was shutting down, you got to work for just 2-3 hours a week. How thankful would you be today if you put in that work?

Okay so let’s get back to it. What is the work? What do I mean? First, if you wanna just dive in to this by yourself, have your search terms revolve around the term “content marketing”. What is it, and how can we utilize it to grow our business. In short, Content marketing is leading with value, rather than your product. It’s creating blog articles, youtube videos, instagram stories, tweets, pinterest boards, any type of media that provides value to your target audience.

So how do we take our first step? The first step is to start a blog if you haven’t done so already. Believe it or not, with the rise of social media. Most store owners think blogs and emails lists are a dying commodity. But here’s what you have to remember, Google recommends content to people that provides value and that they can accurately scan and categorize.

Youtube, Tiktok, and instagram can offer a wide reach, but there are two things wrong with them. Due to them being primarily video content, Google relies on only hash tags and your video description to distribute it to people looking for solutions whether it be entertainment or a problem they have. Blogs however, are full of rich descriptions and key words, and blank slate that Google can take, categorize to address certain search terms, and easily populate for consumers looking for certain things. And the BIGGEST perk of a blog is that you own it.

You can’t control the other mediums of content I mentioned before. If you they have an outage, get canceled, change their algorithm, you are depending on their SEO score and rank to reach your audience and you are building your house on rented land.

The great thing about a blog is that you own the domain. You and only you are in control of how your domain grows, how your content looks, and what is posted on it. So instead of posting 3 videos a day on TikTok where the average engagement is less than 1% just for the sake of exposure, you can provide real value that Google can work with, value that builds a tue audience of loyal fans that love your content and will come to love your product.

And the best part? Now that you have a weekly blog, you know have endless content for all of these mediums. Repurpose your blogs to a video for youtube and instagram. Got a top ten list? Make a graphic for each one and do a series on Instagram or twitter. Need a space to unload your thoughts and get short previews of your content out there? TikTok and Instagram Reels are ready and waiting. So what you can do is use your blog as a home base, a foundation to both bring real engagement to your brand over time, but also as a wellspring of content for other mediums if you feels called in those directions.

If you want to know more about content marketing and the actually steps we recommend to get your blog rolling, check out a blog article WE posted last week below.

What? Did I just repurpose that article into a video format? Well not exactly, but I very well could have! That post seriously is a step-by-step for starting a blog so check it out if you need it. See how easy that was? And you can do it too.

So this week, consider how you can be doing your business a favor, by investing more time than money. We’ll see you next time.
