How to Get Facebook Likes and Instagram Follows from Your Pop Ups and Flyouts

In a recent Whiteboard Wednesday, I talked about some of the reasons that you might not want to include a form in your on-site pop ups or flyouts. For brands who are not doing a ton of email marketing, or if someone has already signed up for one of your campaigns, one great way to use no-form campaigns is using your on-site displays to grow your social audience through Facebook likes or Instagram Followers.

In Privy, there are two ways to quickly create awesome social follow displays, and we actually use versions of both ourselves!

The Basic Option: Add Social Links To Your Display

The easiest way to build a display  designed to drive social likes is to add social icons that link to your profiles and use the headline of your display to encourage people to follow you. To do that, add an image element to your display from within the campaign designer, upload the icon (this is a great free resource for social icons), and add in the appropriate links.

Common Questions:

  • What type of display should you use? I recommend using a flyout from either the left or right of the screen so that it doesn’t interrupt whatever action a visitor is trying to take, but is big enough to draw attention.

  • When do you show it? Asking someone for a social follow right away is a bit aggressive, so the best way to do it is to target people who have visited your site at least once before and already signed up for one of your campaigns. If your subscription to Privy doesn’t allow for that level of audience targeting, limit your social ask to your blog or relevant pages and make the message relevant.

Some examples of messaging that work are: “Like our content? See more of it on our Facebook and Instagram page.” Or if you’re putting it on your product pages, “Be among the first to see our new products by following us on Facebook and Instagram.”

  • How do you track the impact? The top metric here is to look at your social follower growth. In addition, you can track how many clicks you get on your campaign from within your Privy Dashboard.

The Advanced Facebook Option: Embed Your Facebook Like Button

You can actually embed the Facebook “like” box in your campaigns by pasting the plugin code from here into an HTML element in your campaign.

The nice part of this approach is that people can like your page without ever leaving your website. Sadly, Instagram does not yet have this option, but hopefully it’s coming!

In Summary

If you’re investing your time and energy (and money!) in social media, you should also be using your on-site displays to grow your audience. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced, there is an easy way to get started today.
