It's Not Too Late to Run Your Back to School Special

Something weird happened while you were at (or wishing you were at) the pool sipping on an icy beverage. Back to School shopping season arrived and is top of mind for every parent who is responsible for filling the book bags or dorm rooms of their beloved children. Not to worry, it’s not too late to run a back to school special that grabs their attention and helps drive August sales for your store.

If you’re trying to decide whether this is worth a few minutes of your time, consider that the National Retail Federation expects back to school spending to reach over $83 Billion (with a “B”) this year, 45% of which is expected to be online.

And while the top categories for back to school spending are clothing and accessories and electronics, you can tap into the mindset of your shoppers with a back to school special even if you are selling something else. That way you’re changing up your message and staying relevant.

Creating Your Campaign

Here’s how to create your Back to School discount in just a few short steps:

  1. Choose the right offer: Decide whether you want to offer a discount or free shipping, and when you want that offer to expire. You’ll want to create urgency with something like 15% off purchases of more than $20 made by the end of August.

  2. Build your on-site campaign: Create a Privy pop-up or flyout using one of our back to school images as a starting point. Just upload the image for your background, add some text that explains your offer, set your triggers (we recommend a 3 second timer based trigger), choose what pages you want to show it on (if you’re on one of our paid plans), and customize your thank you page.

  3. Create your discount code: Based on the offer you’ve decided on, you can create your coupon code right from the Behavior step of the Privy campaign builder. If you’re on Shopify, you can even create discount codes that will automatically sync with your store.

  4. Create an autoresponder: You’ll want to write an email that is sent as soon as soon as a person completes your form with the coupon code included and any details of the offer (see a starting point below).

  5. Promote your special offer: Make sure you’re not only putting the offer on your site, but also in any email newsletters or social posts you might be sending out. Back to school is a big opportunity, so you’ll want to make sure to get the word out!
